Movie Review: Hocus Pocus 2 Disney+

The Sanderson Sisters (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) in Disney+'s Hocus Pocus 2.

Double, Double, Joy and Trouble: A Cheerful Look at Hocus Pocus 2!

Alright, my fellow Sanderson sisters enthusiasts and lovers of a good spooky-but-fun time, let’s cackle about Hocus Pocus 2, which bewitched its way onto Disney+ on September 30, 2022. Now, revisiting a beloved classic after so long can be tricky, but this sequel managed to capture the nostalgic magic while adding a fresh, optimistic spark that left me grinning like a kid on Halloween night. Seriously, it felt like catching up with some delightfully wicked old friends!

The return of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters is, of course, the main event, and they are an absolute joy to watch. Their chemistry is as electric (and hilariously chaotic) as ever, and they clearly had a blast reprising their iconic roles. They bring the perfect blend of comedic wickedness and surprisingly endearing silliness to the screen. You can’t help but be entertained by their antics as they try to navigate the modern world.

What I particularly appreciated was the film’s optimistic and lighthearted tone. While there are definitely some spooky elements (it is Hocus Pocus, after all!), the movie leans heavily into the fun and comedic aspects. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s a big part of its charm. The new generation of teenagers who accidentally bring the sisters back are also engaging, bringing their own brand of wit and bravery to the story. It’s a nice passing of the torch, in a way.

Visually, Hocus Pocus 2 is a treat, with vibrant sets and some fun, updated special effects that bring the Sanderson sisters’ magic to life in a visually appealing way. The musical numbers are as catchy and infectious as ever, instantly getting you into the Halloween spirit. Seriously, try not to sing along – I dare you!

If you’re a fan of the original or just looking for a fun, family-friendly Halloween adventure with a healthy dose of optimistic silliness, then Hocus Pocus 2 is definitely worth casting a streaming spell on. It’s a delightful and cheerful return to Salem that will leave you feeling nostalgic and ready for some spooky season fun. Go ahead, light that black flame candle – you’re in for a treat!
